HDA is serving as Architect of Record in collaboration with Lead Designer Chris Cedergreen for the adaptive reuse of the former 7 Up Company world headquarters in Clayton, Missouri. Originally completed in 1964, the iconic 11-story Mid-Century Modern building is being transformed into The Upton, a Class A residential development featuring 118 studio, one- and two-bedroom residences. The project gives new purpose to the long-vacant landmark while preserving the architectural character that has made it a recognizable part of the Clayton community for more than 60 years.

The historic rehabilitation balances preservation with contemporary residential design, including restoration of the original curtain wall systems, brick and precast concrete repairs, copper fascia repairs, and revitalization of the building’s elevated plaza. New landscaping and outdoor gathering spaces complement an extensive amenity package featuring a fitness center, club room, entertainment and theater spaces, private speakeasy, game room, heated outdoor spa, outdoor kitchens, fire pits and private dog park. Through thoughtful adaptive reuse, The Upton honors the building’s Mid-Century Modern identity while creating a modern residential experience designed for its next generation of use.
